We all know that a solid wardrobe is based on a foundation of wardrobe staples, but how strongly do you feel you’ve found the *best* staples? Today I’m sharing my tried-and-true favorites that I reach for season after season. These pieces are truly timeless and integrate seamlessly into every season, occasion and mood I find myself in.
Side note: this is a very smart area to spend a bit more than you would on a trend-based piece. If you break it down into cost/wear, it makes sense to invest in excellent quality that will last you years. Then buy your trendier stuff at a discount and you’ll come out ahead. Promise.
A Cardigan
If you’ve been around me in any capacity, you know I live for a good cardigan. I use this sucker year round: on airplanes regardless of season, in chilly air-conditioned restaurants in the summer, you name it. The Gaspard cardigan from my Sezane is my go-to. I own it in the oatmeal and light grey colors and they never leave my closet (or my carry-on bag).

A Great Pair of Denim
A lot of people think of denim as a necessary evil. I think if you find the right pair, you won’t think they’re evil at all. Whether you reach for rigid or stretch denim, there are so many excellent choices out there. The two pairs I reach for the most are my classic Levi’s 501s and my Agolde 90’s Crop.

A Basic White Tee
A basic white tee is an evergreen staple in everyone’s wardrobe. Whether you wear it on its own or layered under sweaters, a high-quality white tee is worth its weight in gold. I tend to buy two different cuts: a boxier shape from Everlane for wearing alone and a fitted version from Uniqlo for layering.

A Crisp Button-Down
Another year-round staple for me is a button-down shirt. I have a zillion different patterns, but everyone should have at least a white and a stripe on hand. My favorite button-down is the Max from Sezane. Make sure to size down on this guy! It’s oversized, which is great, but I still recommend going down at least one size.

A Pair of Ballet Flats
I could/should probably do a post on staple shoes alone, but if I had to pick a single style I think belongs in every closet, it would be the ballet flat. You can wear ballet flats with jeans, skirts, dresses…you name it. Add a sock if it’s chilly (bonus points if your socks have ruffles) and you’re all good to go. The pair I wear the most, believe it or not, is this red pair from Loeffler Randall, and my close 2nd place is the Dancerina from Jeffrey Campbell.

So, what do you think? What did I miss? I’d love to hear your top 5 wardrobe staples! Feel free to share here, or hit me up over on Instagram!
